We all want that weekend feeling to last a little longer (not just the knackered working parents among us). And I’ve recently discovered how to do it. Go away for Friday night and come back on Saturday. Ok, I know this doesn’t sound like rocket science but it really works.
We’ve done this twice recently. The first time Monty and I picked Minnie up from school at 3pm, with the car all packed up, and headed straight down to the New Forest. We stayed in a lovely hotel called The Huntsman in Brockenhurst and James got the train down straight after work and met us there. We had a good dinner, a walk in the Forest among the ponies (the kids had both slept in the car so could stay up), a slap-up breakfast then headed off for a posh lunch at our fave spot The Pig. Then we visited friends in Lyndhurst before heading back on Saturday.
On Sunday morning Minnie got up and put her school uniform on she was so convinced it was Monday. Hurrah!
This Friday we went to Brighton for a wedding sans enfants, whizzed down there to make the 4pm ceremony (ok, my plan does involve being a little creative on a Friday afternoon if you have a 9-5, but I think it’s well worth a half day of holiday to get the feeling of a 3-day weekend), had a brilliant celebration with the bride and groom, stayed at (read staggered back to) The Claremont guest house in Hove, had a wander about by the beach and the shops in the morning before arriving home by lunch time to enjoy the rest of the weekend with the children. Once again, it’s felt like a long weekend.
So go forth guys, and do the Weekend Stretch (imagine some funky theme music here)…
